Open source digital control for model trains

Open Source
Modern model train layouts use digital controls but the hardware can be quite expensive. Permanent layouts in a basement or garage can also be expensive and difficult to move. This layout uses inexpensive standardized modules that snap together, allowing it to be moved or stored whenever required. The control system uses low cost microcontroller boards and free, open source software to make is affordable for anyone.

Kevin Smith

Kevin Smith spent 30 years in the IT industry, most of it as a project manager. Since retiring he has been active in the maker movement as a member and then president of the Regina makerspace, Crashbang Labs. Although that organization was forced to close it's doors, Kevin has continued to work on individual projects and support other makers in his community.

What inspired you to make this project?
I have built 2 previous train layouts, both permanent structures in my basement. They used the older dc method for power which requires a lot of wiring to allow for even 2 trains to run. both were dismantled when I moved to new residences. When I saw that there was an arduino based option for DCC control I was inspired to create a third layout. This time I decided to go for the T-Trak modular standard which is inexpensive and portable. I am comfortable with working on the arduino platform after building a couple of 3d printers and teaching some beginner classes on it. I realize that the model train group in Saskatoon might be planning on attending and, if so, I would have little to add.
